THE MATSON LINE.

Sir, —I notice that the Hon. J. B. Donald, Postmaster-General, states that "it is a good thing for the Dominion that the Matson steamers are running to New Zealand." They may certainly assist merchants and importers, but will it be any help to the Dominion if New Zealand steamers are run off and our men lose their employment? The American steamers aro built in U.S.A., manned by Americans, get practically all their provisions in America, are overhauled and repaired in that country, and the crews' wages are paid and spent in_ America. Under these circumstances it is difficult to understand how the entry of the Matson steamers is going to benefit New Zealand, H. Williams.
