BELIEF WORKERS' FRAUDS.
FALSE STATEMENTS MADE. CONVICTION OF TWO MEN. / / ——• Charges of obtaining money from the Unemployment Board by means of false pretences were preferred •against ' oeorge ;Ed\vard Smith / (Mr. Matthews) and Henry William Cuthbert in the Police Court yesterday. Both men pleaded guilty. The cases were heard separately. Detective-Sergeant Kelly stated that Smith was a married man living apart from his wife • and three children. On April 14 he signed a statement to the effect that his family were dependent upon him and oft that representation he was given unemployment'relief work to which he was not entitled. Altogether be received £l4 too much. / The magistrate, Mr. F« K* Hunt, convicted Smith and placed him on probation for 12 months. , Referring to the case against 'Cutn- -- berl Mr. Kelly said accused obtained £7 4s by a similar false representation, lie had not sent any money to his wife. Cuthbert was convicted and fined bo, in default one month's imprisonment, find was ordered "to make restitution within two months.
