BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

PETITION OF PROTEST. [BY 'TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. A petition has been presented to Parliament by the State Education Defence League, seeking the rejection by the House of the Religious Instruction in Public Schools Enabling Bill. The petitioners claimed that the bill proposed the abolition of the present principle of secularity in national education, by which the responsibility for religious instruction was thrown upon parents and religious institutions outside the schools, and to introduce a new principle of denominationalism. This principle, the petitioners added, opened a way to very grave dangers in tho State.
