CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND.
Sir, —I see that some people are quite vexed because Mr. Forbes will not "crawl" to Canada. The balance of trade has been in Canada's favour long enough find now that she wilt not take our butter there is nothing but gold we can send in exchange for her goods. So she is'too expensive for us to have any more dealings with. F. Palmer. Okaihau.
Sir, —When Canada allowed New Zealand to export butter at one cent per pound, she did so in the opinion tnat she had nothing to fear from butter from that quarter, and that the Canadian article was well able to take care of any outside competition. The result we all know. Under pressure from Mr. Bennett, as Loader of the then Opposition, the Liberal Government raised the tariff to four cents per lb. But Mr. Bennett, not content with this, at the election made the prohibition of New Zealand butter one of his leading planks, carried the country, and immediately .raised the tariff to eight cents per pound. As we have nothing else we can export .to Canada in bulk, trade can only be one-sided under preference, as Canada will sell us a few million pounds' worth of manufactured goods, while our trade with them will be nil. Mr. Bennett is the obstaclo we are up against. He is the Conservative Party; what ho says goes, and he will not allow Now Zealand butter into Canada on anything like reasonable terms. No great quantity of butter from any country will be allowed to enter Canada, .as Australia will fine! very soon. What is more, Mr. Bennett knows lie has more to fear from New- Zealand butter than Australian. On level terma New Zealand . butter will completely swamp Australian, and quality is the answer. . Mr. Bennett is pledged to keep New Zealand butter out of Canada and he will do so as long as he is at the head of affairs, and that will probably be for many years. He has far-reaching influence, and is one of the richest men in Canada to-day, anr that is saying something. Mr. Bennett is no new-comer to politics and has also had a great business experience, hi is the real obstacle to New Zealanc butter. W.M.M.
