VEGETABLE GROWING.

Sir,—A .letter under the above heading, signed by B. Mills, appeals to me as a workable plan to absorb, say, at least. 150 unemployed. There is plenty of unused land, in the outer suburbs ideally situated for the growing of root vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, etc.. also other seasonable vegetables, which are at present grown mostly by Chinese labour. The work could be controlled by an officer of the Agricultural Department, and if only six months' work were provided for say 150 men, an aggregate sum would be earned of practically £IO.OOO. It: addition cheap food would be produced by white labour at a reasonable price to the public, and at very little cost to the Government. White Hope.
