AUCKLAND PRESBYTERY.

SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRESS. CHURCH PLANS APPROVED. The inforni&tion that the Presbyterian Social Service Association is about to open a lodging house for men in poor circumstances was given by the Rev. T. Halliday, secretary of the association, to tho Auckland Presbytery last evening. It was proposed to make a charge of 6d a night, said Mr. Halliday, and to allow, the men the opportunity of cooking their own food. In June 1700 families had been helped through the benevolent work of Sister Esther. The Presbytery meeting, which was largely attended, was presided over by the moderator, Mr. S. J. Harbutt. The Rev. Dr. P. Bruco Thornton, of Canada, was welcomed, and associated with tho Presbytery. On being asked to speak about youth work, Dr. Thornton gave some valuable experiences of his own, pointing to the need of personal sympathetic contact with young people. On behalf of the Property and Finance Committee, Mr. J. W. Eyburn recommended that the plans of the new church for St. Luke's be approved. The moderator rulod that the question of site was not under discussion, but 'only the question of plans, and the Presbytery went into committee to consider an amendment moved by Mr. F. W. Matthews. The plans, which are estimated to involve an expenditure of £14,000, were approved, and the Presbytery expressed its appreciation of tho generous effort of St Luke's congregation and congratulated J.t on its enterprise. The Presbytery expressed its approval of the general principles of the Religious Exercises in State Schools Kill. Congregations were requested to hold their animal foreign missionary meetings in August.
