LOAN FOR CHRISTCHURCH.

AWARD WAGES TO BE PAID. INTEREST AT 5\ PER CENT. [by telegraph.—special reporter.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Local Government Loans Board to-day granted authority to the Christchurch City Council for the raising of £39,500 for the relief of unemployment, in spite of the council's declared .intention to spend the money in paying men on relief work the award rate of 15s 4d a day without a 10 per cent, reduction. It is the council's intention to raise the money immediately at 5| per cent, under authority given by the Local Authorities Relief of Unemployment Extension Act, which was passed by Parliament during the first few days of the current session.

The deputation from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce seeking to quash the loan and a counter deputation from the council urging authority for it were not heard by the Loans Board. At a meeting of the board to-day it was pointed out that, there was no legal authority for the board to receive deputations of this sort.
