BRIDGE AT HAMILTON.
LOCAL BODIES CONFER. SECOND STRUCTURE NECESSARY, [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Thursday. The proposal to erect a second traffic bridge over the Waikato River at Hamilton was discussed at a conference in Hamilton to-day. Representatives were present from the Waikato and Waipa County Councils and the Hamilton Borough Council. The Mayor, Dr, F. D. Pinfold, presided. Dr. Pinfold said the meeting was the outcome of the need for a further bridge over. the river, not only for vehicular traffic, but also for the use of stock. Suggestions had been made to have the bridge built near the Hamilton East Cemetery, in the centre of the town, or near the No. 1 Bridge. The Government had intimated that it was prepared to subsidise the cost up to £BOOO. He considered there was an urgent need for a new structure, even if it was a temporary one.
Mr. T. Iliriton, chairman of the Waikato County Council, said ho was' satisfied the proposed site at the No. 1 Bridge was a suitable one", but expressed a doubt as to whether the corner formed Viath the Great' South Road would prove Safe for traffic and stock. The County Council favoured the proposal and was prepared to give its support. \ A resolution, moved by the Mayor that the conference deemed a further bridge urgently necessary, was carried unanimously. A committee, comprising the Mayor of jETamilton, the borough engineer and the chairmen arid engineers of the two County Councils, was set up to prepare proposals, and report to the conference in a month's time.
It was decided to urge the appointment of a 'commission to allocate the cost between the local bodies concerned.
