Ohoice Quality Beef Entry

An aggregate entry of approximately 600 head of fat cattle came forward. The quality of the ox beef entry was very good." The demand was rather erratic, however, and prices, generally, were slightly below those of last week. Heavy cattle suffered the most. Best ox made up to 24s per 1001b., and best young cow and heifer beef tip to 23s per 1001b. Average butchers' purchases of prime ox worked out at around 20s to 22s per 1001b. Old cow beef sold down to as low as 8s per 1001b., a few pens changing hands at 30s a head.

Top price in Iho section was secured for a particularly choice prime line of solid-boned steers from the King Country which made up to £ll. A small lino of extra choice quality three-year-old steers on account of Mr. j. Scott, Mangere, sold at from £9 12s 6d to £lO. Heavy prime steers on account of Mr. B. Beed, Waeronga, realised from £9 2s 6d to £lO 10s. Extra choice prime Aberdeen Angus steers on account of a Papamoa vendor realised £9 15s. Forty good quality light-weight cattle from the Waikato made from £4 17s 6d to £6 2s 6d. Cows and heifers made up to £7 32s 6d for a particularly choice quality lino from Okoroire. The biggest part of the cow and heifer entry sold at under £4 10s a head. Poor Demand For Calves.

Calves again met a dull sale. Thero was an appreciable percentage of station calves and larger numbers of young calves also camo forward. Tho demand was weak. A few pens sold at premium prices to butchers seeking special quality lots, but the biggest part of tho offering of good quality vealers mado from 15s to 355. Fresh dropped to one week-old calves sold to exporters for tho bobby veal trade at from Is to 8s a head.

Another heavy entry of fat sheep came forward, (ho offering being dfawn from as far south as To Kuiti and Opotiki. Tho average quality of the wether entry was good, although there was not a very big percentage of heavy prime sheep forward. Medium weights predominated. The market held last week's rates, prime wethers making from 13s to 17s 6d. Prime ewes brought from 10s 6d to 14s. Primo lambs made round the equivalent of s£cl to a lb., and in sumc cases even higher prices.

An average entry of pigs met an erratic market. Baconers held last week's prices, selling at around 5Ad a lb. Porkers wero a shade easier, at times realising down to 5d a lb.

WAIKATO STOCK MARKET.

LAMBS IN KEEN DEMAND.

BETTER VALUES FOR MUTTON

Shortage of pasture and the uncertainty of value improvement aro apparently the chief forces responsible for the large amount of stock being offered for sale at, present, l'addock quotations for lines of nil descriptions nro readily obtainable. Mutton and lamb form practically the solo exception, and in this branch export activity has given an impetus that was greatly reeded. Conditions as they affect the individual sections are: — BEEF. Demand seems insufficient to cope with supply. A very heavy .yarding at the central yards this week caused a decline of from Is to 2s per 1001b., but occasional lots of extra prime cattle were well competed for nnd made-closo on recent values. Prime ox sold from 20s to 21s per lOOlb.; ordinary, 19s; plain, 10s; primo heifer, 20s to 21s; prime cow. 18s to 20s; ordinary, 15s: plain. 12s; medium runners, £2 6s to £2 17s (id; heavy vealcrs, 303 to 355; light, from XI. MUTTON. Competition in all centres is brisk, with values firming gradually. Kxporl operations, if continued at their present rate, must soon diminish tho surplus nnd add a value to what remains. Unfortunately local killings seem greatly restricted this year. Lambs aro in excellent demand, both primo and secondgrado being eagerly sought. Values at tho central yards on Tuesday were:—Heavy wethers, Ms to 15s; a few oddments Bold ns high as 17s; medium-weights. 12a Gd to K!s fid; light, from lis; best ewes, to 11b; medium, 8s to 9s; unfinished, from fis Gel: heavy lambs, 15s to 17s fid; medium, 12a Cd to lis Od; light, from 10s.

STORE CATTLE. Only lines of exceptional quality nrouso interest. Good coloured Jersey yearlings | are the most saleable item and values for theso aro comparatively high. Prices are: — Forward bullocks, Xt 10s to X 5 f>s; stores, X 3 IBs to XI ss; three-year steers, £3 to X 3 10s; two-year, X2 5s to X2 15s; small, 25s to 355; fresh cows, 35s to £2: stores. 20s to 255; Jersey heifer calves, £2 to £2 30s; medium, XI 5s to XI 10s; small, from 12s Gd. STORE SHEEP. Operations in this branch are not. extensive, although largo offerings aro being submitted. No doubt the improvement in mutton will before long have a beneficial inlluenco on all sheep, but so far it is not perceptible. Largo drafts of store wethers from Gishorne nro still in tho district awaiting purchase. Prices are:—Forward wethers, 9s to ]os; stores, 7s fid to 8s fid; owes, ill lamb, young, 12s to 13s; four-year, 9s fid to lis; five-year. 7s to 8s; aged, 5s to (is fid; lambs, best, to 8s; medium, 5s Gd to 7s; small, from 4s. DAIRY CATTLE. Clearing sales are n little erratic, but in some cases good averages aro obtained, though naturally strong preference is given to early culvers. Values are:—Young cows, close to profit. .£8 to £10; July-August culvers, £(! to £7; backward, £3 to Xt 10s; best Jersey heifers, close. £7 to £!); August culvers. X 5 to Xfi; backward, X 3 to XI; inferior quality cattlo are. below theso values considerably. PIGS. Pat pigs still maintain firmness in all centres. Stoics are inclined to advance and at Plankton on Tuesday prices wore decidedly belter. Heavy bneoners sell from £3 3s to £:) 10s; lighter, from £2 12s; heavy porkers, X2 7s lo £2 12s; light, 38s to £2 ss. FAT STOCK FOR EXPORT. ACTIVITY OF BUYERS. Exporters have been operating freely in tho market for fat wethers and lambs over the past week or two, and prices have held on levels considerably in advance of thoso expected for this month. At Westfield yesterday exporters were paying up to 16s for primo quality wethers, and up to a lb. for lambs. HAWKE'S BAY STOCK MARKET. A heavy entry of fat stock came forward to the Stortford Lodge (Hawke's Bay) stock sale yesterday. Exporters operated freely for wethers and lambs. Wethers niado up to 16s 9d; ewes, to 15s; lambs, to 17b 6d; steers, to £9 10s; heifers, to £Bj cows t to £6,
