STREET WIDENING SCHEME. QUESTION OF EXPENSE. HASTINGS PROPOSAL REJECTED. [uv TEI.EGIt.VriI. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS. Thursday. A proposal to widen Heretaunga Street, the main business street in Hastings, was rejected by a large majority of property owners last evening. Mr. J. VV. Muwson, director of townplanning, addressed a meeting which was the fourth one held to consider the question. Two meetings previously favouied the scheme, and twice previously Mr. Mawsoifs explanations had been heard. The discussion revealed a good deal of uncompromising hostility to the proposal, mainly on the score of .expense, particularly in view of the financial problems now facing the town. A further argument was (hat on account of the fact that undamaged buildings would be allowed to remain on the present alignment, tho appearance of the street would be spoilt. Tho meeting felt that the present and future prospects of the town did not warrant, making a wide main street at considerable expense. Thi' decision does not, however, " kill" the proposal. RESTORING NAPIER HARBOUR. OBJECTION TO £20.000 LIMIT. [r.y TEl.Ettll AI'II.—PRESS ASSOCIATION'!] NAPIEII, Thursday. A limit of £20,000, of which £IO,OOO is for the breakwater and £IO,OOO for the inner harbour, has been placed upon the cost of reconstruction work of tho Napier Harbour Board by the Minister of Finance. When tho board met yesterday members considered that, this amount was totally inadequate to meet the requirements of the port. Moreover, more than half that sum had already been spent. A deputation, beaded by the chairman, Mr. A. lv .lull, M.P., was appointed to meet the Prime Minister and urge upon him the inadequacy of the amount. MONEY FOR REHABILITATION. FURTHER AMOUNT SOUGHT. [l! V TELEGRAPH.--PREPS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Thursday. The support of the Napier Chamber of Commerce was given last evening to the efforts which are being made to endeavour to procure a larger sum than £1.250.000 for the rehabilitation of llawke's Bay. It was moved by Mr. M. S. Spence that the chamber use every endeavour to get the amount increased. It had been made clear by the Rehabilitation Committee that the Act limited the amount to £1,250,000, which was quite inadequate. The committee had indicated that its task was to distribute the £1,250,000 to the best advantage.
