ESCAPE OF PERPETRATORS,

As a vouttg woman who lives in Titoke Road, Mount Wellington, was walking along the Mount Wcllington-Penrose Road about 6 p.m. yesterday, she was attacked |»y a man who. the afterwards stated, attempted to rob her of her handbag. The attack took place on a deserted por tion of the road and the man was able to make his escape when a motor-car approached the, spot. The young woman was walking along the side of the road when the mail on a bicycle passed her. lie stopped in front of her and asked when a Mr. Redman lived. When she informed him that she did not know, the man suddenly seized her. She resisted and pulled herself free, but the man again grasped her arm. As she was attempting to pull herself free the lights of a motor-car appeared in tho distance and the man at once made off. The young woman then reported tho matter to the police. A resident ot Sandringham Road, who was returning to her home about 10.30 p.m. on Friday, was attacked by two men near the railway overhead bridge in Sandringhain Road. Ono of tho men seized her handbag, but she struggled to pull her arm free and screamed. Several residents of houses in the vicinity rushed out, one of them being the woman's brother, and tho two men turned and ran. They had a good lead and were able to . escape through the grounds ol the Kowliai Junior High School., SUM OF MONEY TAKEN. DEVONPORT CITIZEN'S LOSS. The theft of a sum of £4O was reported to the police on Saturday morning by Mr. G. P. Avery, of 18, Albert Road, Devonport. Mr. Avery left the money on Friday ovening in a pocket of his trousers, which ho placed near his bed on retiring. In tho morning the trousers were found lying in a heap at tho foot of the bed. " Mr. Avery stated that only tho money had been stolen, although a valuable gold watch and a number of rings, valued at about £IOO, were on the dressing-table. , . None of the doors and windows in the house were locked. Although the bedroom window was open, Mr. Avery is of tho opinion that the intruder entered tho house by the back door, which was found open in the morning. POST OFFICE AND STORE. INTRUDERS AT PAENGAROA. [by telegraph. —own correspondent.] TE PUKE, Sunday. The Paengaroa post office, adjoining tho Farmers' Trading Company's building, was entered by burglars early on Saturday morning. The burglary was discovered when the postmistress, Miss Vercoe, opened the office. Only a few coppers had been taken, as tho thief or thieves had not been ablo to open the safe. ' Some cigarettes and chocolates also were stolen from the Trading Company's building. MURUPARA ROBBERY. GOVERNMENT OFFERS REWARD. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Sunday. A reward of £2OO is offered by the Government for information that will lend to the recovery of the £2OOO which was stolen from tho office of tho Public Woiks Department at Murupara on the night of May 4, or for information that will lead to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for tho theft. The money had been made up in payenvelopes at Rotorua on | lie afternoon of May 4, and on arrival at Murupara t'hat evening it was placed in the safe in the Public Works office at the camp. Next- morning it was missing. The money was intended for distribution as wages among tho workmen employed on tho road construction work between Murupara and Galatoa.
