REPAIRS TO HOUSES
APPLICATIONS FOR ASSISTANCE.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NAPIER, Sunday. Applications for assistance from the Napier Relief Committee for repairs to dwellings up to £IOO now number in the. vicinity of 1000, and of this total, 605 have received the committee's approval. committee's operations embrace not only Napier, but also Taradale, West Shore and the Ilawke's Bay County. At a conservative estimate, there must be between 6000 and 7000 houses in tho area, and of these at least two-thirds were damaged extensively enough by the earthquake to necessitate the owners seeking assistance to repair them. Therefore, the total number of applications will probably be in the vicinity of 4000. Applications must be made by June 30. Of the 605 applications disposed of, 468 are from residents in Napier, Taradale and West Shore. The remaining applications on hand are held up pending additional information from applicants. These applications for assistance are in addition to the minimum and essential works, such as the erection of chimneys and the provision of drainage anc. temporary conveniences, which were carried .out .to over 1000 homes by the Public Works Department, the cost of which will be provided by the committee.
