WORK ON THE TRACK.

LITTLE DOUBT GOES WELL. STEEPLECHASE HORSES. STAR COMET'S SOUND TASK. Tho No. I grass, where tho tings were out about Bft., was available for fast work at Ellerslie yesterday, but iho galloping was confined to horses who did not race on the first day. Easily the best gallop recorded was that of Little Doubt (Goulsbro), who cleared right away from Valstreet and Wee Prince at the end of seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. Tt was a good effort under the conditions, and. as ho was successful at his last start. Little Doubt is bound to bo well supported in his engagement to-morrow. Matu (Ludlow) and Wiltshire (Goulsbro) were associated over a round in 2.2 3-5. Matu appeared to be going a shade better than Wiltshire at the end. but there was very little to choose between them. Harbour View aud Kamehanieha encompassed a round in 2.5 4-5. Harbour View holding a slight advantage at the finish. Valroe (Cammick) ran his lirut two furlongs in 28 l-os and completed six in 1.22 2-5. Valroe looks well and got through his work iu good style. Luminary (Foster) _ and Nassock (R. 13. Thomson) jumped six hurdles very satisfactorily, and afterwards went feven furlongs on tho grass in 1.48 2-5. Nassock's jumping is showing steady improvement and lie may eventually prove a useful hurdler. Slump (Rennie) and Nassone (Turner) jumped four hurdles without mistake arid then ran seven furlongs on the grass in 1.49. Nassone is none the worse for her fall oil Wednesday and will probably be produced again in the Hunt Club Cup tomorrow. St. Warn gal infused plenty of dash into his work while doing strong pacing on the sand. Unfortunately he picked up a piece of metal in one of his feet and there may be a possibility of the injury making liini fioro. Star Comet wns allotted sound work over a distance and did it well. Star Cnlnet has never looked better than at present and is expected to make a bold showing in the Great. Northern Steeplechase to-morrow. _ Apacho was walking very short behind when seen on the course yesteiday lie hit a couple of fences very hard before he fell in .the Great Northern Hurdles and it, will probably be a few days before he throws oil his soreness. The fall ho had in tho Great Northern Hurdles did not leave any ill-effects with Spalpiko and he hit out with plenty of freedom when given useful work yesterday. HAWKE'S BAY NEWS. ACTIVITY ON THE TRACKS. GOSHAWK AS A HURDLER. [FROM onu OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HASTINGS, Tuesday. The presence of visiting trotting horses, together with tho local racing teams, particularly jumpers and yearlings, has mado the Hastings track so busy during the past few mornings that it gives the impression that the sport has taken a new lease of life in Hawke's Day. The weather has been perfect, and in consequence the tracks have been in first-class order for training purposes. Moa Bird looks bright and well after her Masterton trip. Great Charter worked well twice round on the inside grass with Gaze yesterday morning. Gaze looks big nnd muscular and is in fine order for coming jumping 6 Head Serang and Crown Jest did threequarter paco on tho same track. Both these horses are looking well. Gold Trail (Chiof l?uler—Pure Gold) and Hesitation aro the most forward of the rising two-year-olds At present Hesitation shows most paco, as he is a compact, ready-mado kind of galloper. Gold Trail cantered once round yesterday morning-with Merry Mint, who ia more forward than most of tho horses here. Later in the morning Merry Mint worked with Goshawk over the same course. J. M. Cameron subsequently sent Goshawk over four hurdles. He shapes well and is a clever jumper. Beau Regal jumped the country well. JJLo went two rounds, showing plenty of dash. Freehold (McGovern) ran once round over tho hurdles in 1.47. He shaped very well, but has to be kicked into his fences. Mr. R. .Holden's rising two-year-olds are forward, us they were broken in on his farm at Te Mahanga. They are two gcod sorts, and the filly. Princess Bell, should come to band early, her breeding being Chief Ruler— Tinkler. In appearance and colour she takes after the Gesture, Awaken, Eaglet type. The other yearling, by Tea TrayAfterglow. is a big upstanding colt, a nice mover with a fine action. They are at pre=ent under L. Gray's charge. Mr. C. Haldane's colts, by Bold nnd Bad nnd Diacouenod. are attractive movers. The Bold and Bad colt has size and action, while the other is of the type of Hard Words and should gallop early. Slinpery. the rising two-year-old brother to Royal Routine, is not a big colt, but shows a lot of ruality. Mnsher, Black Fryer nnd Heartache all iumned well yesterday. Masher looks in good order. At tho two recent meetings at Hamilton tho mile and a-quarter events have been won from a 2.54 mark, tho respective winners being Kewpie's Guy and June Nordica. When Kewpie's Guy won on May 10 she conceded 3ti yards to a good-sized field and won nicely, although she was required to hustle in tho final stages to stall ott a late run by Carnui, who was pocketed until the entrance to the straight. Lust .Suturdjiy, with the class one second looser, June Nordica was 48 yards behind, but won well and did her work in great style. The Marconi Handicap, on the first day of tho Auckland Winter Meeting, is run over 10 furlongs, with a 2.62 limit, a inco that should suit both Kewpie's Guy and June Nordics. Assuming that each receives 24 yards penalty, they will jr«cet oft the front ol the Marconi Haivlh ip. Even though the field will be strong, including many good visitors, the two local candidates mentioned shopld make matters interesting for allcomers.
