SOUTH AFRICAN DEFICIT.
SHORTAGE OF £2,888,000. VARIOUS ADDITIONAL TAXES. [from our own correspondent.] CAPETOWN, April 2. For tho first time since he assumed office—seven years ago N. C. Havenga, Minister of Finance, had to deal this year with a substantial deficit. The deficit, which amounts to £2,888,000, is to be met by increased income tax, a return to (he two-penny postage and additional taxation of tea, millinery, carpets, cutlery and crockery, cotton and silk piece goods, wireless apparatus and motor spirit. The tax on petrol is at the rate of 3d a gallon, tho full amount of which is to bo charged, by agreement of tho oil companies, to the consumer.
