Grant the lawn tennis player youth, an iron constitution, the will to win, tho time, and the money—can he, or she, become great? The answer is a vigorous negative, says an English writer. The great player must have the lawn tennis brain, which in this case means "ball sense," and that again, in the championship degree, one cannot learn; one must be born with it.

Freak golf is comparatively rare, so that tho stated intention of a player to play from Brisbane to Adelaide will be closely watched. Some years ago a golfer made a wager ho would play through certain of London's busy thoroughfares, and, while he duly collected, the stunt was not commercially profitable by reason of a big offset for damage to property in tho way of broken windows. v'

The Auckland Suburban Lawn Tennis cup competition was won by the Selwyn Club, Mount Albert, which went through the season without a loss. This club has now won the trophy for three successive seasons and, during that time, has lost only one match. Tho runner-up this year was the Auckland Transport Club, which sustained only one defeat. The matches in the competition were keenly contested by the various clubs and some splendid tennis was witnessed.

One of the most entertaining of the season's fixtures staged by tho Royal Melbourne Golf Club is the annual match in which the professionals oppose a team of leading women golfers. This year's match proved a triumph for the professionals. They conceded their fair opponents half a stroke a hole and administered a defeat to the tune of 5 games to 3 in tho singles, and 4 to 0 in the foursomes. Previously, honours had been mostly on the women's sido.

Mrs. Larcombe, Mrs. Lambert Chambers and Mrs. Bundy, formerly Miss May Sutton, all previous winners of the British women's lawn tennis championship at Wimbledon, have become professional coaches. Mademoiselle Suzanne Lenglen closed her amateur career by undertaking a tour under the aegis .of Mr. Pile, tho American professional promoter. Mrs. Ilelen Wills Moody, tho latest champion, apparently has no desire to forfeit her amateur status, as she has turned down some tempting offers and recently asked a prohibitivo prico to engage in motion picture work.

The previous best time for the distance, stood to tho credit of W. Jarvis, Dunedin, and this was claimed as a New Zealand record. However, tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association does not recognise a record for 50yds., but application has been made for the time to bo accepted as one. Even if Jarvis' timo is an official record, Crump may not liavo his recognised, as an important condition in connection with a special attempt to establish new figures is that it should be advertised in the press at least three days beforehand.
