LADIES' HOCKEY.

GROUNDS HAMPER STANDARD.

In spite of unfavourable yeather the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association continued its competitions on Saturday when a fourth series of games in each grade was played. Soft grounds did much to spoil tho standard, and most of tho teams woro short, some players being under the impression that games were postponed. In the senior grade Y.W.C.A. lost to Clcvcdon by 7 goals to 2. Y.W.C.A. was a number of players short and Clevedon was minus its usual goalkeoper. Clevedon's forward line showed to advantage throughout. Mrs. Sawbridge. Mrs. Mann and Miss Phillips were tho outstanding players for Y.W.C.A. The best exhibition was staged when Somerville met Kiwi, the latter winning by 4 goals to 1. Somerville was again without Miss Hill, and Miss Simms, of fullback fame, was also absent. Mrs. Hamlin, in tho forwards, and Mrs. Cooper, in the backs, wero prominent for good work. Kiwi adapted itself better to the soft conditions than its opponents, and played a much better gamo than on the previous week when it was defeated by Clevedon. Tho Mount Eden-Papatoetoo game was vory one-sided, tho former, now a much strengthened eleven, running up 8 goals to 0. Papatoetoe was callod_ upon to defend continually. Although its players held gamely to their task they could make little headway against a superior combination.

A record number of entries has been received for the tournament to-day.
