POLICE COURT NEWS.

FRAUDS BY DECORATOR. MECHANIC ADMITS THEFTS. Herbert William Stevens Pearson, a decorator, aged 50 (Mr. Aekins), was charged in the Police Court yesterday with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation, with obtaining £lO credit by fraud, and with stealing £3 in money, a gold ring, a watch and chain and sundry articles of clothing. He pleaded guilty. Mr. W. J. Campbell, probation ofliccr, said accused was first placed on probation at Wanganui in 1925. He had caused considerable trouble and had made no attempt to comply with the terms of his release.

Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that in April accused had fraudulently obtained credit for board at a Palnierstori North hotel, where he had falsely represented himself as being an organiser for the Red Cross Society. The thefts were committed at various hoarding houses. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, sentenced Pearson to six months' imprisonment, to be followed by 12 months' reformative detention.

Having pleaded guilty to the theft of two copper tanks, valued at £5, John Henry Gill, aged 31, mechanic, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. On a further charge of stealing a pair of bullock drag chains, valued at £4 ss, accused was convicted and discharged. The offences wcro committed at Whangarci between August 8 and December 12, 1930.

A week's remand was granted in the case in which Mervyn David Rowe, aged 24, labourer, is charged with fraudulently obtaining £lO 3s froin Sydney William Woods by means of a valueless cheque.
