THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.
OBSERVANCE IN AUCKLAND. VARIED SPORTING EVENTS. RACES AND FOOTBALL. There will be a general holiday tomorrow in honour of the 66th birthday of King George. In Auckland flags will be flown from official buildings and the vessels of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navv will be dressed. Salutes of 21 guns jvill be fired by the Royal New Zealand Artillery from Fort Cautley, North Head, at 8 a.m. and from If.M.S.' Philomel at noon Many sporting attractions have been arranged, tho principal event being the opening day of tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting at, Ellerslie, when the Governor-General, Lord Blcdisloc, and Lady Bledisloe will attend. Several football matches will be played in Auckland, but tho most important gamo will bo at Hamilton, where Auckland will play Waikato in tho first representative contest of the season. Senior and junior Rugby teams representing 11.M.5. Diomede and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve will play at Victoria Park, In an Association football game at Blandford Park Auckland will play the Navy. The Auckland Hockey Association and tho Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association will hold the annual seven-a-side tournament at Remucra and numerous teams are expected to compete. Motor-cycling enthusiasts are interested in the New Zealand tourist trophy contest to be conducted by tho Sports Cycle Club at Ostend, Waiheke Island. The distance of the course is 150 miles and the nature of the country to be traversed will afford competitors a difficult test. In the evening the Northern Boxing Association's professional contest between Archie Hughes, of Australia, and Tommy Donovan, of New Plymouth, will be decided. Most golf clubs in Auckland will be engaged in a variety of matches, including tournament play. The day will also be an important one from tho point of view of bowling clubs, as a number of inter-club and club tournaments have been arranged for decision. A luncheon tendered annually by the community, through the Auckland City Council, to tho King's Empire Veterans will be held in the Town Hall and will be attended by Lord and Lady Bledisloe. Their Excellencies are also to he present next Sunday at a special service in St. Matthew's Church commemorating the King's Birthday.
