MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

CITY COUNCIL WIES.

CANDIDATE DISPLACED.

MR. G. BROWNLEE LOSES SEAT. SUCCESS OF MR. B. MARTIN. The official count of voles cast in the City Council election held last Wednesday was completed on Saturday afternoon, with the exception of less than 100 declaration voles yet to be considered. The new figures show that Mr. G. Brownlee, who was lasit on tho list of successful candidates after the provisional count, is now third down the list of unsuccessful candidates. Mr. B. Martin, who stood in tho Labour interests, has taken Mr. Brownlce's place as a successful candidate. The amended list is as follows: Successful. *G. Grey Campbell (C) .. 11,961 *lf. P. Burton (C) .. 11,367 J). Donaldson ((') . 11,023 <T. L. Coakley (C) 10,897 *A. J. Entrican (C) 10,652 ]f. 11. Jenkins (C) . 10,566 J. Robertson (C) ~. 10,504 *M. J. Bennett (C) . 10,431 *M. J. * Member.? of old council. C—Citizens' Association ticket. L—Labour. This is the second time that Mr. Brownlee has lost a promised seat on the second count. in 1927 he was placed 21st on the list on the provisional count, but was displaced by Mr. A. J. Stallworthy at the official count.

it is not considered likely that the declaration votes will alter the present position, since experience has shown that many votes so cast are informal, and Mr. Martin is 61 votes ahead of the first candidate on the unsuccessful list, Air. R. G. Milligan. Changes of order, without, of course, affecting the candidates' right to seats, have occurred elsewhere in the successful list. Mr. A. J. Entrican is now fifth, having changed places with Mr. 11. R. Jenkins, and Mr. F. If. Leonard has moved from eighth to tenth place. On the evening of the election 605. informal votes were counted, but the revision shows that the informal voles numbered 1540. This is about 7 per cent, of the total number cast.

The checking of the City Council poll having been practically completed, the returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notlev, and his staff turned their attention to the official count of the Transport Board votes, but no new figures were available when work ceased on Saturday. This task is to be resumed to-day.

CHRISTCHUItCH COUNCIL. LABOUR MAJORITY ASSURED. [UY TELEGRAPH.- —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. At the end of the ninth count of votes under the proportional representation system, eight city councillors have been declared elected, and it appears certain that there will be a Labour majority on the council. The elected members are:— Mrs. J. McCombs, Messrs. J. K. Archer, J. McCombs, M.T., Barnctt (all Labour), Andrews, Beanland, Lyons (Citizens' Association), Evans (Independent). The position of the parties will probably bo:—Labour, 8: Citizens Association, 7; Independent. 1. In any case, Labour, with a Labour Mayor, is sure of a majority.
