CHARGE OF UTTERING.

COUNTERFEIT COIN CASE. LABOURER ON TRIAL. EVIDENCE PARTLY HEARD. The trial of James Anfona Wallingfon! Fleming, aged 27, a labourer, on a charge of uttering a counterfeit coin was commenced in the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Smith and a jury. Mr. Hubble, appeared for the Crown and accused was represented by Mr. Anderson. Bessie Wright, occupier of a fruit shop in Mount Eden Road, stated that, on tho evening of January 29, a man entered her shop and tendered what appeared to be a half-crown for a sixpenny packet of chocolate. She " rang" the coin on the counter and was convinced it was not genuine. The mnn purchased tho goods with another half-crown. James Edward Laming, railway guard, said he wag in the shop and noticed accused tender the coin. He followed the man, who was joined by another man in Boston Road. Witness called a constablo and it was then found that a third man had joined accused. The other two walked away from accused when witness and tho constable arrived. Tho counterfeit half-crown was found upon accused, said witness. Two days later witness found 14 counterfeit halfcrowns in a heap in tho grass where the other men had passed. At this stage (he hearing was adjourned until this morning.
