MODERN ART.
ADDRESS BY DR. GUNSON.
"What is Modern Art ?" was the subject of an address given by Dr. E. B. Guns6n, president of the. Auckland Arts Society at a luncheon held in the society's club rooms, Victoria Arcade, yesterday. Tracing the development of modern art during the last four or five centuries, Dr. Gunson emphasised the fact that in all ages art, to be good art, had to be founded on sound basic principles. No matter what particular period was taken under review, the outstanding and lasting works of that period would be found to be satisfying as far as the essentials of art were concerned. In tracing tho historical aspects of the question the speaker mentioned a number of artists whose work could be considered modern, and showed examples of modern artists' work in recent art publications. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Dr. Gunson at the conclusion of his address.
