MOUNT EDEN CHANGES.
DEFEAT OF THE MAYOR. MR. McNAB SUCCESSFUL. SUPPORTERS ALL RETURNED. The vigorous campaign conducted by the Mount Eden Ratepayers' Association met with decided success at the booths in the Mount Eden Borough yesterday, Tlio chief surprise was the defeat of the sitting Mayor, Mr. E. 11. Potter, by an almost two to one majority, by Mr. T. McNab, the association's candidate. Mr. Potter has filled the position of Mayor for the past eight years, and aL the election in 1929 he wart returned unopposed. The Mount Eden Electors' Committee's ticket of 11 nominees for the council, including four sitting councillors, was opposed by 12 nominees of the Ratepayers' Association, ajso including four sitting councillors. Polling was unusually heavy and resulted in the Ratepayers' Association returning the whole 12 of its nominees. There was a considerable gap between the lowest of its candidates and tho highest of its unsuccessful opponents. One of the chief causes of dissatisfaction with tho old regime was the recent increase of valuations in tho borough. Details of the poll are as fellows: —
The return from one small booth has still to come. POLLING AT NEWMARKET. ONLY TWO NEW COUNCILLORS All the sitting members of the Newmarket Borough Council who sought reelection were returned, three of them, Messrs. C. H. K. Mountain, R. E. Newport and T. J. Watts, being at the top of the poll. The candidates who were elected in place of Messrs. W. Mason and W. Hughes, who did not again offer themselves, were Messrs. T. F. Wade and F. Applet on. The poll was heavier than in past years, more than 900 of the 1700 ratepayers on the roll exercising their votes, although the interest taken in the election was not as great as that shown in recent loan polls. As at the previous election, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, was returned without opposition. Details of the voting are as follows: — The Mayoralty. Mr. S. Donaldson (unopposed).
ONE TREE HILL BOROUGH: OLD COUNCILLORS RETURNED. .At One Tree Hill Mr. I. J. Goklstine, deputy-mayor of the previous council, defeated Mr. J. Adams by 330 votes. In the election for the Borough Council there were 13 candidates for the six seats and polling was fairly close. The three members of the old council who sought reelection, Messrs. \V. H. Mulholland, W. I. Hancock and C. L. Slyfield, were returned at the top of the poll in that order. Tolling was brisk at most of the booths throughout the day and 1810 valid votes were cast out of a total roll of 5217. Details of the poll are as follows:
