NEW PLYMOUTH MOTOR SERVICE.
Sir, —Tlic ridiculous increase of motor services on Hi is road and the reduction in fares may be all very well from the public's point of view. To provide a sound, sane service requires expert drivers, who are paid a good wage to insure the safety of tho travelling public, and a high-class vehicle, with the continual addition of later modelled vehicles in tho long run, a service must 'lose its efficiency unless a payable fare is charged. The Government should pass legislation similar to the bill drafted in 1930, which would stabilise the whole transport, and take the licensing authority away from local bodies and vest it in a transport board. Then there would be a check on these pirate services who work below cost and only go bankrupt. In South Africa the elimination of the hire purchase system has done a great deal to prevent the pirate services, ;)s irresponsible irfen cannot obtain cars on hire purchase, and therefore cannot come into competition with the permanent services, which are doing the country's transport work where railways do not exist. Transport Bill.
