FRAUD AND THEFTS.
I , HAWSE'S BAY OFFENCES. RELIEF WORKER SENT TO GAOL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] "WAIPUKIJRAU, Thursday. Eight cHarges of theft and one of fraud were made in the Police Court today against John Henry Avery, aged 57. Accused described himself as a relief worker from Hastings. He came to this district and guaranteed to rebuild chimneys damaged by the earthquake for 30s, and at tty<4 same time to find his own materials. On a charge of fraudulently securing a bag of linie and a bag of cement, valued at 16s, Avery was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. For thefts from /' the Pukeroa sanatorium lie Avas sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to be cumulative with the other sentence. On the other charges, relating to thefts from varioi{s parts of the district, he was sentenced to one month'-e imprisonment. The latter sentences are to be concurrent.
