A preliminaiy inquiry was held to-day l>y the superintendent of mercantile marine into the cause of the mishap to the motor-ship Port llobart through striking a submerged object off 'I urakirae Head, 18 milgs from Cape Palliser, on Saturday. .No report oi tho inquiry is available. Tho vessel has been given a certificate of seaworthiness, and as she has completed discharge here, she leaves to-mor-row for New Plymouth. She will then proceed to Port Chalmers, where she will go into dry dock, returning to New Plymouth to starjt Homeward loading. The report of the diver shows that considerable damage was done to some plates and to the starboard propeller.

A geneyal average has been declared over the.vessel's cargo.
