FISCAL PROBLEM.
POSITION OF BRITAIN. LABOUR AND A TARIFF. LONDON. April 5. A bint that the Economic Advisory Council-has advised the Government to impose a tariff was given by the First Ixird of tho Admiralty, Mr. A. Y. Alexander, in an address to the Co-operative Party at Blackpool. Alluding to Australia as an instance of the incapacity of protectionist countries to protect their workers, Mr. Alexander said that summing up the fiscal issue and taking into account tho advico of the Economic Council his view was that Britain could not maintain the present standard of living and that wages must come down. " If you dare not face the industrial consequences of such a policy," said the Minister, " you can do it by applying a tariff on the goods tho workers consume." In an interview later Mr. Alexander denied that he bad intended to convey the idea that the Economic Council had presented a report. He was merely quoting tho 'widespread, feeling of economists and industrialists. Reynolds News, however, states that the Government has received .and rejected tho advico of / the council to impose a tmiff.
