NORTH SHORE DRAINAGE.
The Birkenhead Borough Council met. last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P.~ McPhail, presiding. ' Mr. H. 11. Watkins, engineer to k tha Auckland and Suburban Drainage.Board, wrote that he had not overlooked the request of the Birkenhead Borough for an interview with reference to a drain-,-age scheme for the borough. ■ The four areas on the northern side of the Waitemata Harbour were being referred to in his comprehensive report. Under these circumstances ■it would be unsatisfactory for him at the present time to devote special attention to any proposed scheme: for Birkenhead. It was decided to await the report.
The waterworks engineer reported that 3,840,000 gallons of water had been used during the past month. The surface of Lake Pupuke had fallen from 9in. below sea level a month ago to 15£ in. below this level. The Mayor stated that £lsl had been paid in wages last week under the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme, and it was expected there would be an increase of 50 per cent, next week.
