EARTHQUAKES AT MURCHISON.
Sir, —Letters liavs been received by the writer from residents in the Rappahannock and Maruia districts and also from the chairman of the Murchisoft District Council regarding (lie earth shocks which occurred on February 27. This was considered the most severe shock the district has felt for the past 12 months and is chiefly remarkable for the fact that it appears to have invaded a district previously practically immune, namely the Rappahannock anc'l Upper Maruia. The centre seems to have been near Rappahannock. Mr. J. Thomson's accommodation house got a good shake, and fissures appeared in the :*oads about 2ft. wide. The oil seepages on the Green Valley Oil Company's block were increasingly active, and the gas emanation in the Blackwater Valley has also increased. The Murchison Oil Company's bore in the Mangles Valley (to use the informant's words) fairly reeks with the smell of gas. John A. Spencer.
