GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
APPOINTMENT TO CANADA OTTAWA TO NOMINATE. LONDON, Feb. G. The impending appointment of the Governor-General of Canada in succession to Viscount Willingdot), Viceroydesignate of India, is raising an interesting discussion as the result of tho precedent set by Australia in appointing an Australian-born Governor. It is admitted in Dominion Office circles that Australia revolutionised tho traditional practice and transferred the responsibility of recommendations from the Dominion Office to the Dominions.
It is gathered that Canada, although not desirous of departing from tho traditional custom, has agreed to fall into step with Australia in so far as to nominate Lord Willingdon's successor, but is not prepared to emulate Australia's example by pledging itself to tho restriction of nominations to Canadians. The Dominion Office is assured that " the best available man is good enough for Canada, whether he is a Canadian or otherwise."
