TAXATION BURDEN.

EFFECT IN ENGLAND. LESS MONEY FOR CHARITIES. LONDON, Jan. 27. Hitherto a generous supporter of local charities, Mr. G. Foster Clark, of Maidstone, is sending out a reply to applications for help on a printed card, which says: "In the 1930 Budget the Government placed the whola of the extra cost of social services upon under 2 per cent, of the electorate. This extra taxation absorbs the whole sum I allocate to subscriptions for charities. Therefore, at present I am discontinuing any private subscriptions." On the reverse side appears this sentence from the report on taxation issued by tho Trades Union Federation in March, 1930: "It is foolish to expect social improvements, for many millions of persons can continuously be paid by exactions from the wealth of a few thousands." Viscount Astor has told his tenants and employees that pressure of taxation has forced him to close Cliveden Mansion for the present.
