BROADSIDING THRILLS.

INTER-PROVINCIAL RACES.

SOUTHERN TEAM DEFEATED. CONTESTS AT WESTERN SPRINGS. The intcr-provincial broadsiding match between Auckland and Wellington at the Western Springs Speedway on Saturday evening produced some exceptionally fine riding and resulted in a win for A. Mattson's local team by 29 points to 24. The Wellington caj)tain, W. Kilmister, was in good form and defeated Mattson in one event, after an exciting race. Kilmister took the lead at the start and although Mattson rode particularly well ho could not pass, and finished 15 yards behind.

The second time the rival captains met Mattson had the lead, when Kilmister fell. Mattson had a cortain win within easy reach, but as the Wellington captain was out of the race he preferred to slide to a stop the next time round. Mattson's sportsmanlike spirit was appreciated by the crowd, who realised he had stopped on purpose, and ho was roundly cheered as be came past later. Tho other members of the Southern team, C. Tonks, A. llarvie, E. Naylor, P. Phillips and A. Hunger, all scored points for their side, while Mattson's men, B. Bray, F. Day, W. Allen, A. Way and W. Herbert, each contributed substantially toward Auckland's win. In tho B grade events tho riding showed a general improvement. C. Goldberg, ono of tho leading riders at Blandford Park last year, competed in one event, but is obviously out of practice. Ho has a fast motor and should bo in good form after a few more meotings. J. In the final race Mattson started from the inside, with Kilmister next. From the rolling start Kilmister took tho lead, being 20 yards ahead of Mattson coming out of the first bend. Cormack (Norton), 7b, 1; B. Cairns (Douglas), OJe, 2. From the start Cormack Jed, closely followed by Cairns. Curtis did not get away well, while Coyle fell in the second lap.
