OPEN-AIR BOXING.
BLAY VERSUS HUGHES. Lixcepfional interest. will be shown in (lie boxing contest that will fake place at Carlaw lark next Saturday afternoon in aid of the earthquake fund, when Bobby Blay. the Australian feather-weight, and Archie Hughes, feather-weight champion of New South Wales, will both majte their first appearance in Auckland. Archie Hughes, who arrived from Sydney last Tuesday, has been tra'mng at tho Parnell gymnasium with Charlie Purdy and others. He will continue his training every evening this week. Bobby Blay will arrive this morning with Mr. J. Campbell, his manager, and is expected to train at the fire brigade gymnasium. Reports from the South show that Blay is ;i boxer of outstanding niept, possessing cleverness, plenty of punching power and a great defence. Hughes has had 151 contests and has not yet been knocked out. j The following amateur preliminaries have been arranged:—D. Sjoberg, light-heavy-weight champion of Wellington, v. ,T. Shad- | bolt; S. Smith v. A. Spragg: R. Purdie, New Zealand amateur feather-weight, champion, v. Murfitt; B. Thompson v. W. Hogg; F. Breeno v. C. Grimmens. An emergency bout has been arranged between R. Martin and A. Blewden.
