PIGS AND BACON.
Sir, —Tho Government, has advocated for years the Berkshirc-Tamworth cross as tho right type of pig for first-class bacouers. I havo kept to that breed for several years and havo always fed them on grain and skimmed milk, generally getting top prices. I sold a lino to ono of tho leading bacon companies last week. They wero sonio of tho finest pigs 1 had over raised. Several pig buyers who saw them remarked on their excellent quality and fino lengthy type. I received my cheque, and to my astonishment tho Government grader had marked them second quality, and I received tho munificent sum of per lb. First grades get 43d. It is galling to think that tho farmer sells his pigs for 3jd and then has to pay Is 4d per lb. for rashers at the grocers. Last year whon pigs were double tho price bacon was Is 6d per lb. for rashers. Who is getting the profit, tho bacon companies or tho grocers? While tho farmers are producing pigs at an absolute loss the companies and grocers appear to be making a bigger profit than over Piglet.
