CONFERENCE IN NORTH.

THE SYSTEM OF TAXATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] WIIANGAREI, Sunday. A conference of the North Auckland Counties' Association was held at Whangarei at the week-end, when all counties from Waitemata northward were represented. The Commissioner of Transport, Mr. J. Hunter, and Mr. A. Wellsted, representing the Railway Department, also were present. Mr. L. Webb presided.

In connection with tho classification of roads it was decided that the Transport Department bo requested to investigate, with the counties concerned, the question whether or not it would be more economical to impose a minimum classification of 4£ tons in place of 2£ tons. Dealing with road taxation, tho following resolution was carried:—"That tho executive be urged to convene a special conference without delay for tho purpose of reviewing tho present system of taxation for road purposes and to place beforo Cabinet a scheme designed to bring about an equitable measure of partial derating in counties; and, further.that the executive bo requested to seek tho cooperation and support of the executive ot' the Farmers' Union in its endeavours to bring about the necessary alteration in tho incidence of taxation."
