£4453 IN FOUR DAYS.

SYMPATHY WITH SUFFERERS.

ASSISTANCE FROM OVERSEAS. WIDE RESPONSE TO APPEAL. Fully appreciative of the urgent need for relief of earthquake sufferers, Auckland citizens are giving promptly to the subscription lists which have been opened throughout tho city.

The Hehald ,and Auckland Weekly News fund now totals £4453 19s Bd, having increased by £llOO 10s as a result of contributions made on Saturday, tho fourth day of the appeal, which the proprietors headed with 250 guineas.

All sections of tho community aro responding in proportion to their moans. A pleasing aspect of tho appeal is tho practical sympathy being shown by offico staffs and factory employees who are giving liberally from salaries and wages. Overseas business houses and private persons having interests in New Zealand, or sentimental regard for tho Dominion, aro continuing to despatch monetary help. Messrs. Edgar Allen and Company, Limited, of Sheffield, havo cabled their Auckland agents instructing that £SO bo expended on their behalf to assist survivors in any way thought best.

In response to the Primo Ministci .5 appeal that money forwarded to relief funds bo mado available for the relief of sufferers as soon as possible, tho Herald paid the sum of £3850 from its fund into tho Public Account at tho Bank of New Zealand on Saturday. Tho following additional donations wcro

OTHER DONATIONS.

THE PROVINCIAL FUNDS.

Donations to tho provincial and southern funds continue to be made freely. Hamilton's contribution to tho relief fund has reached £2705. 'lho Waikato Winter Show Association has given £l5O. The Rodney Agricultural Society's Show was held on Saturday, and tho executive decided to devote tho day's profit to the relief fund. A collection during the day realised £l6. At the Albany Show on Saturday a collection reached £lO 10s. The funds at Helensville now stand at nearly £95. A total of £73 has been subscribed to the Ellcrslie Town Board's fund.

The fund at Thames now exceeds £2OO. An offer has been made to accommodato 50 adults and 50 children. The To Kuiti list totals £l7O. Tho Hnnlly fund has been headed with a donation of £25 from tho Borough Council.

Westport has raised £I2OO, and the Timaru fund has reached £2OOO.

Tho subscription lists in New Plymouth have reached £3OOO, including £2OOO in tho Taranaki Herald's fund. Tho Christchurch City Council fund totals £14,298. Over £4OOO has been raised by other funds.

DONATIONS IN BRITAIN.

MANY BEING RECEIVED. NO OFFICIAL FUND. (Received February 8, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. Tho High Commissioner for New Zealand, Sir Thomar Wilford, in a letter to the Times, which sent, him £I.OOO for tho earthquake relief, says that, although ho did not propose to issue an appeal for assistance for the sufferers, tho magnificent voluntary lead given by tho Times will, in spite of these bad days, nndoubtedly stimulato tho desire of peoplo in tho Homeland to help the afflicted. Sir Thomas says he will bo grateful if tho Times will acknowledge subscriptions, which are now coming in freely. Tho Times says the economic depression will make reconstruction rnoro burdensome, and will severely test the sturdy self-reliance on which New Zoalandors prido themselves Admiration of their fine spirit, and sympathy in their misfortune will encourage many more peoplo to follow the examplo of those who already have contributed.
