A NATIONAL LOAN.
Sir,—The cost of repairing the damage caused by the earthquake will far exceed any possible total of charitable subscriptions obtained. However fine the spirit animating those who give in this manner, a calamity of such magnitude palls for more than sympathy. The writer is of the opinion that nothing less than a national loan, bearing a low rate of interest, will meet the requirements of the present situation. . H. F. Tansley. 20, Lower Symonds Street.
