The : distinction of being tho first climbers to make an ascent of Mount ,Tasmnn by the eastern arete, and also the first New Zealand party to reach the crest, belongs to Messrs. Rod Syme, of Hawera, and L. Y. Biyant, of Wellington, who returned to their homes this week after a visit to the Southern Alps. r I he climbers wero without guides. They waited at the Ilaast Hut from December 23 to January 29 before reaching their objective. Six previous starts were made, each being foilad by alpine storms. The ascent and descent,' from tlie Haast Hut, including the traverse of Mount I/cnderfelt, took hours.

, Only four other parties have been known to reach the peak of Mount Tasman, which is regarded as the most difficult climb in tho 'Southern Alps.
