THEFT BY GIRL.
"SPENDING TOO MUCH." i-, ACCUSED GIVEN A CHANCE. " Tho regrettable feature of this case is that the girl was earning a good salary and was spending *too much money oil herself," said tho magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, when a domestic, aged 17, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with stealing a dress and a slip, of n total value of £9 19s. Mr. Sullivan, who represented accused, entered a plea of guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused had been employed as a maid at a salary of £1 a week and her keep. Sho had left for a holiday lato in December, taking the clothing, which belonged to her employer's daughter, with her. Accused's mother was in poor circumstances, and tho girl could have helped her moro. Accused recently purchased a coat for eight guineas.
Mr. Sullivan said that on account of tho girl's youth he hoped the case would be adjourned for six months. She had been giving half her wages to her mother, and the theft was committed as a result of a sudden temptation. Major Annie Gordon, of the Salvation Army, said tho girl needed control. Sho sometimes gave her mother 7s 6d a week, but that was not sufficient.
Accused was remanded in the custody of tho polico until the afternoon, when the magistrate adjourned the case for a year. " You must obey tho orders of Major Gordon, particularly in regard to tho amount of money you spend on dress and tho amount you givo to your mother," ho added.
