SUGAR FROM AMERICA.
PROTEST AT IMPORTATION, BUSINESS MEN IN THE SOUTH. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] JNVERCARGILL. Thursday. A protest against tho importation of refined sugar from America was made at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce. Among tho cargo discharged from the coastal steamer Storm on Monday were several truck loads of imported sugar, manufactured in America, by the National Sugar Refining Company of New York. It was packed in bags of 1001b. each.
Tho attention of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce was drawn to the matter to-day by Mr. A. H. Hoylcs, who said that surely an extraordinary state of affairs was disclosod in view of tho fact that New Zealand was so well supplied with sugar. He said he considered the importation of refined sugar from America was very regrettable. All the members expressed surprise that the product should bo brought to New Zealand from America, since it was considered that the price of sugar in the Dominion was the cheapest in the world. Importers present or represented at the meeting disclaimed all knowledge of the transaction.
On tho chairman's suggestion the secretary communicated with the shipping oflico concerned, and as a result itwas learned that the sugar had been transhipped from Wellington, the quantity being 447 bags. Tho meeting carried a motion strongly protesting against the importation of American sugar into New Zealand, and it was agreed to bring the matter under the notice of the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
It is understood that small quantities of American refined sugar have been imported into New Zealand from time to time during tho past eight or uino months.
