SUPPOSED ISLANDS.

| DOUGHERTY AND NIMROD. EXISTENCE DISPROVED. OSLO, Jan. 7. Depths of more than 2000 fathoms were found by the Antarctic survey ship Norvegia on tho supposed site of tho Nimrod Islands, tho existence of which is definitely disproved. The Norvegia then sought the so-called Dougherty Island, reaching its reported position on December 23. the depth heio was also more than 2000 fathoms and no trace of land could be discovered. While some geographers do not recognise tho existence of these islands they are shown on some maps, tho Nimrod Island group, about 1800 miles southwest from Invercargill, and Dougherty Island, 1500 miles west of King Edward VII. Land, on the Ross Sea coast. Explorers, including tho late Sir Lm<?st Shacklcton and Captain R. I'. Scott, failed to find the islands, and were doubtful of their existence, as they got deep soundings at their supposed sites.
