THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
Sir.—ln the report of road conditions in Thursday's Herald, it is stated that the metalled parts of the Main South Road were in ''good order just prior to Christmas. I can scarcely credit this. On Christinas morning I went over the road on my way to Wellington and found conditions abominable—pot holes and corrugations reminiscent of five or six years ago—before the Papakura section was put down in concrete. - Between Ngaruawahia arid Hamilton, travelling in a light car was a most irritating ex-peri-ence. I observed that the loose metal had been carefully scraped over to the sides of the road—not by passing cars, but by graders apparently—leaving one of the worst 15 miles of road it ha.s been my lot to negotiate in recent years. A grader could havo spread the, metal in a very short time and so made the road fairly good. I travelled to Wellington, via Taranaki, returning via Raetihi, and apart from tho Auckland-Te Awamutu stretch found the roads excellent. Morbiß.
