TRADE OF COMMONWEALTH.

TREATY WITH CANADA.

GOOD WORK OF MINISTER.

BOTH COUNTRIES TO BENEFIT.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, (Received January 7, 9.45 p.m.) •VANCOUVER, Jan. 6.

The visit of Mr. P. J. Moloney, Australian Minister of Markets, which has completely eradicated the trade friction between Canada and Australia which was so apparent a few months ago, is regarded as a triumph for the visiting Minister. Mr. Moloney was tendered a State dinner at Victoria to-day. Tho ratification of the new treaty by the Canadian Parliament is a foregone conclusion. The Vancouver welcome to the Minister was particularly enthusiastic, as a result of the Australian good will shown to the British Columbia timber trade delegation some months ago. Tho newspapers declare that Mr. Moloney's handling of the trade situation has made a warm spot for Australia in the hearts of Canadians, and cleared up many false impressions by placing a true picture of Australia before Canadians.

While the terms of the treaty are secret, it is understood that both countries retain tho right to protect specificindustries while granting favoured treatment to non-competitive products. Tho Canadian Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr. 11. 11. Stevens, in a farewell message to Mr. Moloney, states:— " It is a wonderful pleasure to have been associated with you in approaching problems which have been settled to the mutual advantage of Australia and Canada."

Confidence that the Governments of Canada and Australia would bo able to complete the trade treaty to the advantage of both countries was expressed by the Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett, in a farewell telegram to Mr. Moloney. Other messages of confidence and goodwill were received from the other members of the Canadian Government.
