TROTTING AT OTAHUHU.

USEFUL TEAMS IN WORK,

CANDIDATES FOR NORTHLAND. THE WELLINGTON GOLD CUP. The training tracks at Otahuhu, like those at Epsom, boar a quiet appearance following upon the Auckland Trotting Club's carnival. However, a general stir was noticeable on Tuesday that suggested an early return to training activities in view of the Northland Trotting Club's Meeting at the end of tho month. It is a:lso probable that Kohara and Jewel Pointer will go to Wellington for the Gold Cup. S. M. August's large team bears a healthy condition, bu,t the majority aro having en easy time at present. June Nordica, Great Vanity, Army Boy, Firpo and Jewel Pointer visited tho track this week, and the first three will go to Whangarei. Great Vanity and Army Boy havo yet to lose their maiden status but June Nordica won a twelve furlongs event in the South before passing into August's hands. Firpo will bo sent back to Wellington in the near futuro.

Tho game and hardy Jewel Pointer looks none the worse for his hard racing at Epsom and ho came through a strenuous ordeal unscathed. August appears to have solved the problem of keeping hir» sound. If the handicap suits Jewel Pointer will leave for Wellington next Wednesday. E. S. Groat's Team. E. S. Groat has Realty, Lucy Belle, Queen's Bond, Black Ballin, Kohara and a novice trotter who claims full relationship to Marblo Star, on the active list, and it is probable that Lucy Belle and Black Ballin will bo his representatives on the trip north. Queen's Bond lias never looked bettor and appears to have done well as the result of her racing in the spring. Realty is carrying a lot of condition and will not be ready for active service for some time.

Kohara looks as fit as hands can make him. The recent severe contests have.'left no ill-effects. Kohara did not race lip to his track trials and his indifferent displays puzzled his trainor, who felt confident of securing some portion of the prize-money. Kohara will bo given an entry for the "Wellington Cup, and if suitably handicapped may be sent to Hult Park.

G. Mitchell is turning his attention to Lndy Yvonne, Typist and a maiden pacer who claims relationship to Peter Pirate. He is a stocky looking customer with a good idea of pacing, but gives tho impression that he will require time to develop speed powers. The aged Great Audubon mare Typist is acquitting herself creditably in her work, while the gay deceiver Lndy Yvonne is still a puzzle to her trainer. If she raced as she works on some occasions it would be no trouble for- her to pick up a stake. Sebisca, the "bread-and-butter" member of the stable, is enjoying a holiday. Form of Sunshower. T. Grimmond is allowing Sunshower to take matters easy since tho recent carnival at whioh she failed to race up to expectations. Sunshower has not yet Btruck form since changing her abode from south to north, but when that time arrives she will show her rivals how to hurry up over ten furlongs. Grimmond is getting Some Dillon and Judy Thorpe ready for the Northland meeting and Some Dillon, who has had the benefit of recent racing, should bo in excellent trim for his engagements. The day Some Dillon goes correctly all the way I the opposition will get tired chasing him.

With the exception of The Tartar, who appears to have taken a new lease of life, G. Paton's team contains only novices and some young gallopers. A fine upstanding mare by has adopted the square gait, and for a green trotter is shaping pleasingly. A natty little fellow by Gold Bell from Roma follows the pacing business and he hits out on the track in bold style. The Tartar is bowling along in his usual "come day go day" manner and threatens to mix things merrily with the pacers at one of the approaching meetings.

D. S. Hangar has his pair, Master Huia and Rosalie's Triumph, in fine order for immediate engagements, and the former in particular is 'displaying indications that he might win a good stake before th 6 season is much further advanced. His two displays over two miles at Epsom last month "were attractive and if properly placed at some of the country fixtures a big event would .probably come his way, Rosalie's Triumph is on the jolly sido but with a bit of racing she may furnish into a useful trotter. Marionette's Progress. J. Cutta is putting in a good deal of time with Marionette and the improving mare is showing signs of the careful attentention bestowed upon her. Last season Marionette, who had been generally looked upon as a non-stayer, put up some sound performances over two miles, and as the present season advances she should render further useful service in long-distance races. It will not occasion surprise to find Marionette reach country cup class befo.re the season ends. Miss Nancy Edwards has the three-year-old colt by Worthy Bingen from Agnes Chief in work again and the half-brother to Akenehi is pacing a]ong in attractive fashion. The grey has not had anything like a regular preparation, consequently .he is not as forward as others of his age who have already had the benefit of racing. The Triumph, who has been leading a life of idleness at Mardelle, will be put into work again with a view to racing at later fixtures. If the American-bred trotter regained his form he would be an acquisition to the "square brigade" in the Auckland province. J. Billington, who some seasons ago was a prominent figure in trotting circles, lias made a re-entry into the sport and is at present bestowing attention on the trotting mare Lochade. Lochnde's progress during past years has been slow, but she has never carried so much condition as at present, or hit out so solidly in her work. Last season, driven on a couple of occasions by J, T. Paul, Lochade ran fair races, and is still on a mark from which she should ■ have reasonable prospects of success. Windchat and Trustworthy. T. Brady has not done nmch with the promising young trotter Windchat since she racecj at the Auckland November meeting, but she has taken no harm from the holiday, and all going well in the interval will race at Epsom in February. Trustworthy is having an easy- time for a week or so, and Brady is turning his attention to the education of a two-year-old filly by Worthy Bond from Papatina, dam of Betty Moko and Windchat. Another two-year-old, a half-sister to Trustworthy, named Confidence, is receiving her early tuition at the hands of S. M. August. Among a number of foals running at the Mardelle Stud Farm is one by Peterwah from Black Gold, who takes the eye as a likely sort He is sturdily built and has the appearance of being framed on speed lines. In this respect the <;olt is well enough bred for anything, as his siro is the trotting race champion of the world, while his dam, a full-sister to Gold Jacket, if she had stood up to solid training, might have eclipsed the "deeds of the dual Auckland Cup winner when at his best. When the pair were trained at Epsom a few seasons ago Black Gold showed raro speed on several occasions.
