PARKING RESTRICTIONS
STRIKING TRANSFORMATION.
TRAFFIC NOT YET NORMAL. ABSENCE OF HOLIDAY MOTORISTS The operation of the by-law which places a ban on all day car parking in a number of the central streets which have been so used has effected a striking change in their appearance and has removed much congestion in traffic. A certain amount of all day parking is developing in streets of the outer fringe such as Princes Street, and Hobson Street, but it is yet too early to form an opinion as to the adequacy of the space available for this use within easy distance of Queen Street because many professional men are still on holiday and the many cars they represent are not in the city. But the question of all day parking is really subordinate to that, of the facilities for brief pauses in the central area. The new by-law extends them and it is now easy for people on shopping expeditions to drive from place to place without having to seek a, spot to leave their car, often at some distance from their destination.
It has been suggested that city businesses will benefit considerably owing to this fact and that some suburban shopping centres may suffer. In the past many people, finding it difficult in dense traffic to make their last calls, have picked up their needs in a suburb. The taxi interests heartily support the by-law chiefly on account of the fact that they can usually take a Queen Street fare to the pavement and wait for a few minutes. In the past such traffic often had to stop in the roadway outside other cars which was inconvenient as well as illegal. The presumption must be that in the past a certain amount of prolonged parking took place in Queen Street.
