CIVIL MARRIAGES.

NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED. BIRTHS SHOW A DECLINE. AUCKLAND VITAL STATISTICS. The principal feature of (lie past year's vital statistics for Auckland is llio increase in marriages by the registrar, the figures for 1930 establishing a record for the district. During the past year 538 marriages were performed by the registrar, this number being in excess of the previous peak year, 1926, when 535 marriages were performed. The following are the annual figures of marriages by the registrar since 1926: — 1926, 535; 1927, 494; 1928, 496; 1929, 468; 1930, 538. Marriages performed in churches nlso show an increase. The figures for llio last year are 88 in excess of the 1929 total of 2054. Another feature of the returns is the continuance of the decline in births which commenced in 1927. Since the peak figure of 3582 was reached in 1926, there has been a steady decrease, and the total of 2823 last year is 178 less than iri 1929. The total is the lowest since 1919. Tho following are the annual figures since 1919

Deaths, on the other hand, have maintained the increase which was shown in 1929. The figures for last year are 50 in excess of those for the preceding year. The following table shows the Auckland vital statistics for each month of the past two years:—

DECREASE IN MARRIAGES. FIGURES FOR DUNEDIN. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Thursday. A striking feature of the vital statistics foV Dunedin and district for the past year is that the number of marriages is nearly 100 below tho previous year's total. The largo decrease is probably a reflex of the economic depression. There were slightly more births last year and fewer deaths.
