NEW YEAR HOLIDAY.

HUMID WEATHER CONDITIONS HARBOUR TRIPS POPULAR. ATTRACTIONS FOR TO-DAY. Muggy, humid weather conditions, with occasional showers of rain, marked tho New Year's Day holiday. Heavy rain fell at 7 a.m., and although there wore more showers during tho day thousands of peoplo were ablo to spend tho . holiday out of doors. Undaunted by the early morning rain, long queues of people waited their turn to embark on tho ferry and excursion steamers at 9 o'clock and boats left for Waiheke, the northern beaches and other islands of tho gulf packed with holidaymakers. Tho Duchess, which was bound' for Kawau Island, was crowded some minutes (before her sailing timo and another si,earner had to be requisitioned to carry those who could nob find accommodation on tho Duchess. In some parts of tho city, such as Herno Bay and Ponsonby, heavy rain fell at 11 o'clock, and at Ellcrslie racocourse, where tho summer meeting was in progress, there was light rain. The round of amusements and attractions will be. renumed to-day. The Auckland Racing Cluo will conclude its meeting at Ellcrslie and numerous sporting and athletic events will bo huld in various parts of tho city arid suburbs. Cricket followers will havo the second day's play between Auckland and North Auckland at Eden Park, and various holiday games will bo played at other grounds. The final games in the Auckland Bowling Centre's Christnjas tournament will commence this morning at the Auckland Club's green, the Remuera Bowling Club's tournament will bo resumed, arid other games will bo played at various suburban greens. To-morrow motor-cycling events will be held at the Western Springs Speedway.
