NEW GUINEA EARTHQUAKE.
TIDAL WAVE CAUSED.
SMALL ISLANDS SWEPT.
HOUSES WASHED TO SEA.
By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received December 30, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEIY, Dec. 30. Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., has received a radio message from its Manus Island station, New Guinea, saying the steamer Duris felt an earthquake on the morning' of December 24. A tidal wave struck the Western Islands. It rose to a height of eight feet at Awinn, and four feet at Pellululin. Houses and cattle at Awinn were washed to sea. The manager and the boys escaped by climbing palms. They aro now living on the beach. The fate of Maty and Aua, small and unprotected islands, and of Allison Island, is not known. The direction of the wave was from the south-east.
Manus Island is one of the Admiralty Islands, off the north coast of New Guinea, in the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Western Islands are part of the group. Maty lies further to tho west.
