NOTES ON THE PLAY

The two closest finishes in the first round were between Whittle and Layland and Parsons and Benson. Both gcoies weie small, the margins being one P™ lll case. Both Whittle and Lay and played well and the fast work of both was well executed. Parsons played a fine game against Benson's undoubtedly better team, and his timely drawing enabled his team to wrest the narrow victory._ Benson was also in good form, his drawing, especially be in C the r lccSnd" wund a good deal of interest, centred in the meeting of Parker and Kcatley. Both teams were woll matxhed : and a great, struggle ensued. . W team was slow to get going, and when the 10th head was played the scoie was 11 to 2 against it. A three and a coup , of singles on tho next three heads reduced the leeway. Borky Nook then scored a couple, but Auckland five ti sequence of 4 # • » • »i* 10 itu favot Wh A couple" to'Vocky Nook on the ooth head saw the final head entered upon with one point difference. Ro ° k> ,., tried very hard to equalise, and aHhoug Keatley shifted the jack to the oitch with his last bowl he had no position bowls much to work on and he was one down on the head and two down on.the board The game between Wright and Claike v.as also a good one to watch. Wright was 8 4 on the 7th head, but a four to Clarke on the next head equalised matters. Clarke scored five singles in a row. The penvc on the 17th hea l was 14-12 in Carlton s favour, but a five on the 18th head saw this team increase its lead to seven. Even play to the finish saw Carlton win by four ""Hardley's West End team, which put up such a good record in the section phiy, did not perform well at all and was eliminated early. The second game was lost by a singlo to Davidson's Auckland rink. The third-round game between Clarke and Parsons was close up to the 10th head when the score read 6—5 in favour of Clarke, bp to this stage Parsons managed to save well, ns his team was more or less eclipsed bv the solid play of tho Carlton front division men. From now onwards, in spite of pood efforts by the Ponsonby skip, the Carlton team, which was playing in faultless style, forged ahead slowly. The score was 11 7 in Carlton's favour, with 15 heads gono A couple of threes and a two improved tho Carlton total, and the team was 10 up and two heads to go. Ponsonby scored o. single nnd the Inst hend was not plfiyed. Parsons played a great game under ndverse circumstances. When his team was up against it Clarke rose to the occasion and brought off some fine shots. Fine concerted action on the part of the Carlton players stamped the team as one of the best on the ground. . Up to a certain stage the Keatley-Wright game was a very good one, as the scores, 14 all and 15 heads played, indicate. From this point, however, the Onehunga team failed to score, and a five to Keatley on the 17th head practically settled the issue. Tho Rocky Nook team always appeared to he the stronger side, its combined play closely resembling that of Clarke's Carlton team. Livingstone found Layland a hard man to dispose of and although he held a lead of seven points on the 17th head his opponent struggled on gamely and was within an ace of scoring the three points required for a tie on the last head. The teams were evenly matched, but Kerr's piny as number three was a potent factor in tho success of the Onehunga team.

Whittle sot, well away from Parker, the score reading 18 to 5 with 13 heads played. The Auckland team rallied well, however, and was only five points down with thice heads to go. The Grey Lynn team took the final heads and won by seven points. Better combination was attain in evidence in tho winning team, which, individually, showed no weak link Armstrong, Pukekohe, who had a hyp in the first, round and put Turner, Carlton, down in the second round, encountered another Carlton team, in charge of Higgott, in the third round, and after a fairly even contest won through by a margin of five points.
