MATCH AT WELLINGTON.

OTAGO BATSMEN FAIL. SMALL HOPE OF VICTORY. FINE BOWLING BY J. NEWMAN. [BY TELEOttAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] 1 WELLINGTON. Saturday. Something more nearly approaching interprovincial form was revealed in the third day's play in the Plunket Shield match between Olago and Wellington at the Basin Reserve to-day. The weather was beautifully fine with a northerly breeze blowing. The Ota go batsmen again found the Wellington bowling too good for them and had to defend throughout tho innings, Cherry was the only man to shape with anything like confidence. As in the first innings he mot the ball with the full face of the bat and was not afraid to drive and cut Moloney shaped well until he made the mistake which brought about his downfall.

J. Newman, tho Nelson left-hander, carried off the bowling honours. Lowry kept him going this afternoon for 21 overs, and this against a strong northerly wind. Ho was bowling just as woll at the finish as when he started and in that time ho had captured three wickets. Ho clean bowled both Blunt and Badcock and had Elmes caught behind the wickets. The fact that only 21 runs came from his 21 overs bears eloquent testimony to tho perfect length ho maintained.

Crook, die Wellington colt, proved once again that he is a really serviceable fastmedium bowler. Ho bowled sixteen overs to-day for 45 runs and two wickets. BhindeJl captured one for 38 off 20 overs and kept tho batsmen very quiet. Gallichan secured one wicket for two runs off four overs. McGirr's Good Score.

McGirr made the highest score of his Plunkcfc Shield career. He gave four chances, but his innings was a blend of defence and aggression. Blunt bowled well for Otago. Otago was in a hopeless position when stumps were drawn this afternoon, as it still required 256 runs to avoid defeat with only three wickets in hand. At the close of play on Friday, Wellington had lost three wickets in its second innings for .197 runs, McGirr (86) and Lowry (15), being the not out men. Both commenced to put runs on at a brisk pace and while showing sound defence, did some forceful driving and cutting. It was not until the two slow bowlers, Blunt and Alloo, camo on that the rate of scoring was steadied. McGirr hit one from Alloo into Badcock's hands at cover. Ho found the boundary a dozen times and his partnership with Lowrv put on 147 for the fourth wicket. McLeod did not last long. After threo singles he attempted to swing one from Blunt to on and snicked the ball on to his wicket. Lamason, top scorer in the first innings, had a short life, as Alloo beat him badly.

Lowry was the next to go. The Wellington captain had been at the wickets for 150 minutes for 68 which included only half a dozen boundary strokes. Gallichan failed to score, turning one from Blunt to first slip where Elmes made a smart catch. During the morning Dunning had to retire with a strained sinew. At luncheon 1525 runs were on for the loss of. eight wickets. Wellington Innings Closes.

Crook and J. Newman ran the scorp to 339 when Newman was clean bowled by Blunt. Blundell, the last man, assisted Crook to bring 350 up. I.emin bowled Crook who had shaped well for his 22, as had Blundell for his £0 not out. The innings, which had lasted 340 minutes, closed for 369, leaving Otago 398 to make to win.

Cherry and Cavanagh commenced Otago's second innings. The batsmen started off on their uphill task in resolute fashion. Runs came steadily off Blundell, Crook and A. Newman and 30 appeared in as many minutes. The score was carried to 42 when Cavanagh, who had reached 14, hit one from Crook into McGirr's hands close in at mid-on. Blunt joined Cherry, who was 24. J. Newman was bowling well against the wind, not a run being scored off bis first five overs. The lea adjournment was fatal to Cherry. After flashing one from Crook past cover to the ropes lie nibbled at a rising ball in Crook's next over and was well taken by James. Cherry had been batting for an hour and aquarler for 48, which included five fours. The first ball of J..Newman's fourteenth over beat Blunt all the way. Moloney and Elmes were now associated, tut the first ball of J. Newman's sixteenth over saw Elmes smartly caught at the wickets by James. Newman Bowls Like Machine. Badcoek followed and the hundred appeared. J. Newman continued to bowl like a machine and shattered Badcock's wickets with the last ball of his nineteenth over. Only twenty runs had been scored off him. A. W. Alloo, the Otago captain, came out. BlundelJ, was brought on and at once met with success, as Moloney sent one softly into McLeod's hands at silly mid-on.

Galland joined AI 100 with 286 runs required to win and only four wickets left. At 134 Lowry threw tho ball to Gallichan for the first time in the match and a cheer went up from the crowd. This was renewed when tho tall Manawatu left-hander dismissed tliG Otago captain with his' third delivery, A. Newman taking a smart catch in the slips. Dunning camo next with Badcock to run for him and lie and Galland wore still together, at six o'clock. Scores:— WELLINGTON. First Innings 189 Second Innings. C. S.
