EARTHQUAKE IN BURMA.
DAMAGE TO RAILWAYS.
FORTY PEOPLE KILLED.
MANY" BUILDINGS DESTROYED.

In tile earthquake which was experienced throughout Burma this morning 40 people were killed and many injured in the Pyu area, near Toungoo, 166 miles from JRangoon. Numerous buildings were destroyed. The courthouse and two railway bridges were badly damaged in Pyu, which caused a suspension of the service between Upper and Lower Burma.
Fire broke out after the shocks and several shops were gutted. Heavy damage was caused to buildings in Toungoo, but Rangoon escaped lightly. Several trains were completely derailed by earth movements and in some places the rails sank sft. Bridge girders were jerked from their trestles in some localities.
A Press Association message from Wellington says a good seismograph record of the Burma earthquake was obtained at the Dominion Observatory.
